Naming and Arranging the Sidebar (Nomenclature)

Nomenclature is one screen where you make the sidebar speak your business language. Rename any group or screen, drag screens into the group your team expects, and put the ones you use most at the top. For example, if your staff are used to a Masters menu, rename the Items group to "Masters" and drag Customers and Vendors into it.

Changes apply to every user in this workspace. They only change names and positions, so a user still sees only the screens their plan and role allow.

The first time you open this screen a short guided tour starts automatically. Replay it any time with Show me how in the header.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Nomenclature. The Settings entry is pinned at the bottom of the sidebar.
  2. The screen shows your sidebar as a list of groups, in the order the sidebar shows them. Each group folds open and shut: click the arrow beside a group's icon to show or hide its screens, or use Expand all / Collapse all next to the search box. The number on a group's row is how many screens it holds. Type in Find a group or screen… to narrow the list. Every group with a match opens on its own.
  3. To rename, type the new name into the box on that row. The faded text in an empty box is the original name. The curved arrow beside a renamed box brings the original name back.
  4. To move a screen, drag it by the handle on the left of its row (the six dots). Drop it higher or lower in the same group, or inside a different group. A line shows where it will land. To drop into a closed group, hold the screen over it for a moment and it opens, or drop it straight onto the closed group to add it at the end.
  5. To move a whole group, drag the handle on the group's header row up or down.
  6. No mouse, or on a tablet? Click the three-dot menu at the end of a row instead. Choose Move up or Move down, or pick a group under Move to. A screen moved this way goes to the end of the group you pick.
  7. Check the Live Preview panel on the right. It shows the sidebar as everyone will see it, with renamed and moved entries highlighted.
  8. Save from the amber unsaved-changes bar. Your sidebar, search results and page breadcrumbs update right away. Other users see the change the next time they load the console.

Good to know

  • Settings always stays at the bottom. You can rename it, but it can't be moved and nothing can be moved into its section, so the screen that fixes the sidebar is always where you expect it.
  • A group you empty disappears from the sidebar until a screen is moved back into it. It stays listed on this page as a drop target.
  • A group with a single screen shows in the sidebar as one link named after the group, the same way Home and Reports do.
  • Only screens you can open are listed. Screens outside your plan or role don't appear here, and they keep their names and places.
  • New screens added in a later update show up in their usual group, under their usual name, until you change them.
  • Other Page Titles at the bottom lists page headings that are not in the sidebar (for example the heading of the sales history page), so you can rename those too.
  • To start over, click Reset everything and save. Every name and screen you can see goes back to how it shipped.
