Commission FAQ

Someone sold a lot but their commission is small. Why? Look at their Uncollected credit column. Commission is earned when money is received, so a big credit sale that nobody has paid for yet earns nothing. Record the customer's payment in Accountant → Receivables and recalculate the run (if it's still a draft) or let it fall into the next one.

Why is the commission less than the percentage of the invoice total? Because tax is excluded. A 118,000 invoice made up of 100,000 goods and 18,000 tax earns commission on 100,000. The tax was never yours.

A customer returned goods. Who loses the commission? The person who made the original sale, not whoever processed the return. If the return lands in a period that's still a draft, it reduces their base directly. If the period is already approved and paid, it comes off their next statement.

Can I pay commission on profit instead of sales? No. It would mean showing the person earning it what the business makes on each item, and that decision has been made deliberately.

Can somebody be on two plans? No — one active plan per person at a time. If you try to add someone who is already on a plan, the message names it. What you can do is put them on the team plan with a rate override, which is usually what "a different rate for this one person" really means.

I've changed a plan's rate. Does last month change? No. The rate that was applied is frozen onto each statement when the run is approved. Editing a plan only affects runs that haven't been approved yet.

Can I delete a run I don't like? A draft, yes. An approved one, no — it has already booked an expense and a debt to staff. Corrections come through as negative lines on the following run.

A rep collected an old invoice from last year. Which month does that earn in? The month you record the receipt in, not the month of the original sale. Commission follows the money.

Counter sales aren't showing a salesperson. Sales record whoever was logged in at the till when they were rung up. Anything sold before commission was switched on has nobody attached and can't earn — commission starts from the day the feature went live.

Where does commission show up in my accounts? As Commission Expense in your Profit & Loss, under indirect expenses (it's a cost of selling, not a cost of the goods). What you owe but haven't paid sits as Commission Payable on the Balance Sheet until you record the payment.
